What Is a Perfume Tester? A Buyer's Guide

If you've browsed our site, you've probably noticed some listings marked "(Tester)" — often at a lower price than the standard bottle. Here's what that actually means, so you can shop with confidence.

What is a fragrance tester?

A tester is the exact same perfume or cologne as the retail version — same juice, same concentration, same batch quality — produced by the same manufacturer under license from the fragrance house. The only difference is the packaging.

Why are testers cheaper?

Testers are made without the retail extras: no printed outer box, no cellophane wrap, and sometimes a plain white cap instead of the branded one. Since brands don't have to pay for elaborate packaging, testers are typically sold at a discount — often 20–40% off the boxed price — while the fragrance inside is identical.

Is a tester authentic?

Yes. Testers are 100% genuine product manufactured by the same fragrance house, using the same formula as the boxed version. They are not knockoffs, dupes, or expired stock — they're simply intended for in-store sampling before brands started selling them directly at a discount.

Do testers smell different?

No. The fragrance concentration and formula are unchanged. What can vary slightly is the cap or sprayer style, and occasionally the bottle will have a small marking (like "tester" printed on the base) required by the manufacturer. The scent itself is exactly what you'd get from the boxed version.

What's missing from a tester?

  • The outer retail box (sometimes)
  • Cellophane shrink wrap
  • In rare cases, the branded cap is swapped for a plain one

Everything else — the bottle, the juice, the sprayer mechanism — is the same as what you'd find at a department store counter.

Should you buy a tester?

If you don't care about display packaging and want to save money on an authentic fragrance, testers are one of the best ways to get a designer scent for less. They make great everyday bottles to keep at home, since you're not paying for a box you'll likely throw away anyway.
